Teaching Philosophy:
My philosophy is best expressed in this sample from my biography that I share with my students in the Teacher Information widget.
"I have always been the kind of teacher who tries to break down the information in to small, easily digestible pieces. So, if the course is giving you more than you can chew at a time, let me know, and I can help you break it down. I expect you to put in the time and the work. You must practice the problems, not just watch and think that you understand. Those are two different things. Don’t be fooled into thinking that you know how to do a problem just because think you understand while watching someone else do it!"
I like to provide specific instructions and advice on how to be successful. Therefore, I begin each course giving the students the following advice.
"Even though you will have flexibility with this online course, you will need to log in every day to make sure that you stay on track. You should follow the course schedule (provided on the course home page). As you work through your week, I suggest that you keep track of questions you have. A good idea would be to always keep a certain color pen or highlighter with you while you are working. Only use this color to write down questions in the margins of your notes. (Yes, you should be taking notes!) If a question is answered in the lessons during the week, write down the answer. For the questions that you still have, we can discuss these during our live sessions (synchronous learning session or SLS). Remember that if a question is keeping you from finishing your work, email or page me. Don’t wait until the SLS."
